Britain's Prince Harry to meet with his father, King Charles, media reports say

LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry has arrived at Clarence House in London for an expected meeting with his father, King Charles III, British media reported. The meeting on Wednesday would be their first in well over a year. The two have been estranged since Harry and his wife, Meghan, left royal life and moved to California in 2020 and then publicly aired grievances about his family. The Duke of Sussex has been in the U.K. for a series of visits to charities he supports, and speculation has been swirling that he might meet his father.

There’s a new Bachelorette in town, and we’ve met her before. “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” star Taylor Frankie Paul will be the lead on Season 22 of “The Bachelorette.” She broke the news herself Wednesday on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. ABC confirmed the season would air next year. Paul became known as an influencer in the #MomTok community. She told “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper she at first wondered if she could manage the show as a single mom. She's also returning to the third season of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” on Hulu in November. Hulu and ABC are both owned by Disney.

Amazon's Zoox launches its robotaxi service in Las Vegas

Amazon’s Zoox on Wednesday launched its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, offering free rides through parts of the entertainment mecca for anyone willing to gamble on the safety of a driverless vehicle. The Las Vegas debut of Zoox’s long-planned ride-hailing service reflects Amazon-owned robotaxi maker’s confidence in the safety of its boxy vehicles after two years of testing them in the city.  Zoox's robotaxis will pick up and drop off passengers at five designated locations, and the rides will be free for a few months.

Eagles' Jalen Carter loses $57,222 for spitting on Cowboys QB Dak Prescott

Jalen Carter’s penalty for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott sends a message to the rest of the league. Carter is losing $57,222 for the infraction, the equivalent of his game check for Week 1 because the NFL considers the punishment a one-game suspension with time served. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle didn’t play a snap after he was ejected from Philadelphia’s 24-20 victory over Dallas on Thursday. Carter is expected to be on the field when the Eagles face the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch on Sunday. The team could impose its own discipline such as benching Carter for the first play, the first series or longer.

Alex Jones asks US Supreme Court to hear appeal of $1.4 billion Sandy Hook judgment

Far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear his appeal of the $1.4 billion judgment a Connecticut jury and judge issued against him for calling the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting a hoax. The Infowars host argues in a filing to the court that the judgment for defamation and infliction of emotional distress violates his constitutional rights, including freedom of speech and protections against excessive punishment. The shooting killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut. The legal judgment came in lawsuits filed by some of the shooting victims' relatives, whose lawyers dispute Jones' claims to the Supreme Court.

Cracker Barrel suspends plans to remodel restaurants after logo blowup

Cracker Barrel said Tuesday it’s suspending remodels of its restaurants after criticism from many longtime fans. The announcement came two weeks after Cracker Barrel backtracked on a separate plan to modernize and simplify its logo. Fans of the chain had also loudly criticized that move. Lebanon, Tennessee-based Cracker Barrel said Tuesday that just four of its 660 restaurants had been remodeled as part of a test for the brand. The remodels, which began last year, added more comfortable seating, brighter lights, lighter paint and a simplified assortment of antiques but kept signature elements like fireplaces.

Tampa Bay Rays' Wander Franco has been detained and admitted into a clinic for mental health issues

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been detained by police and admitted to a mental health clinic in the Dominican Republic. Authorities said on Tuesday his family requested the move, and it is not linked to any legal issues. Earlier this year, Franco was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor and received a two-year suspended sentence. Last weekend, he reported $16,000 stolen from a resort, but his attorney later claimed the money was found. Franco disagreed, insisting it had been stolen. His future in Major League Baseball remains uncertain, although he says he is still training.

Scientists are baffled by a powerful and long-lasting gamma ray explosion outside our galaxy

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Scientists have discovered a gamma ray explosion outside our galaxy that's not only exceptionally powerful, but also long-lasting. Telescopes on Earth and in space — including Hubble — have teamed up to study the explosion of high-energy radiation first observed in July. Scientists said Tuesday that repeated bursts of gamma rays were detected over the course of a day. That's highly unusual since these kinds of bursts normally last just minutes or even milliseconds as dying stars collapse or are torn apart by black holes. Scientists say such a long and recurrent gamma ray burst has never been seen before.

Ford recalling almost 1.5 million vehicles in US due to rear view camera issue

Ford is recalling almost 1.5 million vehicles in the United States because the rear view camera may show a blank or distorted image on the center display screen while the vehicle is in reverse, which can reduce or distort the driver’s view of what’s behind the car and increase the risk of a crash. The recall includes certain vehicles from model years 2015 to 2019 of the Lincoln Navigator, Lincoln MKC, Mustang, Ranger, Transit, Transit Connect, Econoline, Edge, Expedition, F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD and F-550 SD.

Palestinian beer defies the odds and goes on sale in Britain with help from Scottish brewer

LONDON (AP) — A Palestinian beer is set to go on sale in British stores despite border checks and a distance of some 2,500 miles from the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Taybeh Brewing Co. has faced numerous challenges including decades of conflict and water shortages on the way to the sales beginning Wednesday. Business has suffered since the recent outbreak of war in the region. Scottish company Brewgooder has collaborated with Taybeh to create a beer called Sun & Stone. The lager will be available in Co-op's 1,600 U.K. stores. Proceeds will support charities in Taybeh and aid efforts in Gaza.
