Parry makes first hole-in-one at this year's British Open

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — The British Open at Royal Portrush has had its first hole-in-one. English golfer John Parry’s tee shot at the 192-yard No. 13 landed at the front of the green, took a couple of bounces and hopped straight into the cup. There were big celebrations on the tee with Parry congratulated by playing partner Justin Leonard, the 1997 Open champion. The hole-in-one took Parry to 4-under par for his round and 3 under for the tournament. The 38-year-old Parry is making his second appearance at a British Open, after St. Andrews in 2022.

When they saw themselves, they both quickly ducked out of the frame. The video went viral, and the internet got to work. The video rocketed around social media, as people speculated about why the couple dodged the camera. Empathy for the pair and their families was mixed with plenty of snarky commentary.

Witnesses to Felix Baumgartner's fatal paragliding crash heard large boom as it spun to the ground

PORTO SANT'ELIPIDO, Italy (AP) — Beachgoers knew something was wrong when they heard a loud boom ring out as a paraglider spun out of control, killing its only occupant, extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner. Italian police are investigating Thursday's crash in an Adriatic Sea beach town involving  the skydiver renowned as the first to fall faster than the speed of sound.  A 30-year-old mother watched the deadly descent unfold Thursday afternoon from a neighboring beach structure with her two young children.  Mirella Ivanov said everything was normal, then the paraglider started spinning like a top, followed by a loud boom.  The mayor of Porto Sant’Elipido confirmed 56-year-old Baumgartner’s death.

Chevron gets go ahead for $53B Hess deal, and access to one of the biggest oil finds this decade

HOUSTON (AP) — Chevron has scored a critical ruling in Paris that has given it the go-ahead for a $53 billion acquisition of Hess and access to one of the biggest oil finds of the decade. Chevron said Friday that it completed its acquisition of Hess shortly after the ruling from the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris. Exxon had challenged Chevron’s bid for Hess, one of three companies with access to the massive Stabroek Block oil field off the coast of Guyana. Guyana is a country of 791,000 people that is poised to become the world’s fourth-largest offshore oil producer, placing it ahead of Qatar, the United States, Mexico and Norway. It has become a major producer in recent years.

K-pop band 1VERSE debuts with 2 North Korean defector members

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The five-member K-pop group 1VERSE is debuting Friday, with two North Korean defectors alongside members from the United States and Japan. Rapper Hyuk, who was born in North Korea and lived there until age 12, was discovered while working at a factory. Singer Seok defected in 2019 and was connected to the agency through an acquaintance from weekend soccer. The group released their debut single album “The 1st Verse” with the title track “Shattered.”

Rescuers find mom and son lost in California forest thanks to notes they left on a remote road

A mother and her 9-year-old son who got lost in a remote California forest were rescued over the weekend after searchers found notes the pair had left behind. The two were on their way to a Boy Scouts camp when they lost their GPS signal on a secluded road and became stranded Friday. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office says a volunteer search team found them Saturday after narrowing their location and discovering the notes. The notes were weighed down by rocks and said they were just up the road. While they were lost, the boy also used a whistle to signal for help.

Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams decides to retire from NFL at age 30

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams has retired from the NFL at age 30. His agent informed the team Wednesday, just before training camp began Thursday. Williams signed a one-year deal in March but was placed on the physically unable to perform list Monday due to an undisclosed injury. Williams played eight NFL seasons, including stints with the Jets and Steelers, and had 330 career receptions and 32 touchdowns. Known for his leadership, he was a key player for the Chargers. Meanwhile, the Chargers signed tackle Ryan Nelson from the UFL and are addressing wide receiver Tre' Harris' holdout.

Former Eagles special teams ace Bryan Braman dies from rare form of cancer at 38

Bryan Braman, a key special teams player for the Philadelphia Eagles’ first Super Bowl championship team, has died from a rare and aggressive form of cancer. He was 38. Braman was diagnosed earlier this year and had multiple surgeries in recent months in an attempt to treat the illness. He died Thursday morning, according to a statement issued by the team. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Texans in 2011, Braman played seven seasons in the NFL. He spent his first three in Houston and last four in Philadelphia.

Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice sentenced to 30 days in jail over Dallas high-speed crash

DALLAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after authorities said he and another speeding driver caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway last year. Prosecutors say Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph when he caused the March 2024 wreck. Multiple people were injured. On Thursday, Rice pleaded guilty to felony charges, including causing serious bodily injury. As part of a plea deal, he also received five years of deferred probation and must pay $115,000 for victims' medical expenses. In a statement, Rice apologized for the harm caused and pledged to make amends to those affected.
