Glades County electric school buses power emergency preparedness – and snow cones

Posted

MOORE HAVEN — As Floridians prepare for the 2025 Hurricane Season, Glades County is harnessing new technology made available by its electric school bus fleet, which is able to double as a mobile power source in the event of an emergency.

To showcase the utility of the buses, Glades County School District, in partnership with Highland Electric Fleets, will host a community event on Tuesday, June 10 at 10:30 AM at Riverside Park (299 Riverside Drive in Moore Haven.

The event will demonstrate how these buses can provide critical backup power during outages, serving as mobile generators, cooling stations, or even sending energy back to the grid. As part of the event, one of the buses will power a snow cone machine for students and families to enjoy as a fun example of how the buses can deliver comfort and support the community during a crisis.

The event will include speakers from:

• Glades County Emergency Operations Center,
• Glades Health Department,
• Glades Utility Authority,
• Glades County School Food Services,

• Highland Electric Fleets,
• Glades Electric Cooperative.

In January, Glades County rolled out 13 electric school buses, replacing more than half of its diesel fleet and providing many students with air-conditioned bus rides for the very first time.
