MOORE HAVEN — The Florida Department of Education has designated Glades County School District as an “A-rated” district, marking a historic milestone for the district and the community it serves. Glades County has not earned an “A” designation since 2011.
After five years of sustained academic progress—moving from a “C” to a “B” and now to the top rating—the district’s leadership, staff, families, and partners celebrate this achievement as a testament to tireless work, innovative programming, and a steadfast commitment to student success.
Superintendent Dr. Alice Beth Barfield, who was elected in 2020, set a bold goal early in her tenure: elevate the district to an “A” rating. She understood the challenge and, drawing on her experience as a turnaround principal and a National Board Certified Teacher, pursued a rigorous path of instructional improvement, program refinement, and strategic investment. When the state’s initial roll-out of grades placed Glades County in a “B” designation, the district undertook a thorough review and appeal process to verify student achievement and growth. After this process, the Department of Education confirmed Glades County as an “A”-rated district.
Over the past five years, Glades County has demonstrated consistent academic progress. The district’s trajectory reflects a steady climb: from “C” in earlier years to “B” last year, and now the coveted “A.” In addition to the top rating, Glades County reports the second-highest increase in academic achievement among all 67 Florida counties over the past five years, and the third-highest increase in teacher pay in the state. The district is also close to achieving full staffing with every classroom led by a fully certified teacher.
An important element of Glades County’s academic advancement is the Glades Collegiate Academy, a partnership with Florida Southwestern College that enables students to earn college credits while still in high school. Through this program, nearly a third of the senior class graduates with an Associate Degree, providing a significant head start on postsecondary education and career readiness. The program is provided at no cost to students or their families.
“While earning an ‘A’ is a significant accomplishment, we know that there is always room to grow. Our commitment is to continuous improvement—refining programs, enhancing instruction, and supporting every student to reach their fullest potential,” said Superintendent Dr. Alice Beth Barfield. “This achievement is not an endpoint, but a milestone in our ongoing journey toward educational excellence.”
This designation is more than a letter grade; it reflects the dedication of the district’s staff, the support of families, and the potential of every student in Glades County. It underscores what can be achieved when a community unites around a shared mission of educational excellence.
