Moore Haven man charged with vehicular homicide

A Moore Haven man faces two counts of vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal May 25 crash in Lee County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, on May 25 at 10:30 p.m., a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was traveling west on the center lane of State Road 82 at a high rate of speed, approaching the intersection with Sunshine Boulevard.

At the same time, a sedan was traveling east on the left turn lane of SR 82, approaching the intersection of Sunshine Boulevard.

The front of the SUV collided with the right side of the sedan, the FHP report states.

A passenger in the SUV, a 35-year-old Lehigh Acres woman, died in the crash.

The driver of the SUV, Jimmy Randall Roberts Jr., 34, of Moore Haven, and three male passengers were critically injured.

Roberts, along with a 19-year-old Lehigh Acres male,  a 17-year-old Lehigh Acres male and a 34-year-old Lehigh Acres male -- were transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the sedan, an 18-year-old Lehigh Acres woman, sustained critical injuries. She was transported to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

On May 31, Roberts was released from Gulf Coast Medical Center. The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit placed Roberts  under arrest for the below mentioned criminal charges and booked him into the Lee County Jail:

  • Vehicular Homicide – (2 counts);
  • Reckless Driving with Serious Injuries (3 counts);
  • Driving While License Suspended or Revoked (causing death);
  • DWLSR - Habitual Traffic Offender; and,
  • Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
