GLADES COUNTY – An Okeechobee woman was killed in a three-vehicle accident on State Road 78 on Feb. 26, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

On Feb. 26, at approximately 7:24 p.m. a crash occurred on SR-78 approximately 235 feet south of Roberson Drive (northeast of Lakeport), in Glades County Florida.

 A SUV driven by a 59-year-old Okeechobee woman was southbound on SR 78 just south of Roberson Drive.

A sedan, driven by a 21-year-old Naples woman, was northbound on SR 78 just south of Roberson Drive.

 A fully loaded semi tractor trailer, driven by a 54-year-old Hialeah man, was also northbound, directly behind the sedan.

 According to the FHP report, the SUV crossed over the broken painted yellow center lines and traveled into the direct path of travel for the sedan and semi.

The sedan driver swerved left, into the southbound lane, in attempt to avoid a collision. However, the SUV closed the distance on the sedan faster than the sedan driver could react.

The front right portion of the SUV collided with the rear right portion of the sedan. This action caused the sedan to rotate, coming to final rest, partly on the grass shoulder and in the southbound travel lane of SR 78.

 The front of the semi then collided with the front left portion of the SUV. The SUV rotated and exited the roadway onto the grass shoulder of the southbound side of SR 78.

 The semi sustained disabling damage to the front drive axle and veered into the southbound lane and traveling northwest. The SUV came to final rest, on the grass shoulder on the southbound side of SR 78, just north of the sedan.

The driver of the SUV was killed in the crash. The other two drivers were not injured, according to the FHP report.
