Trump extends TikTok ban deadline for a third time

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to keep TikTok running in the U.S. for another 90 days to give his administration more time to broker a deal to bring the social media platform under American ownership. It is the third time Trump has extended the deadline. The first one was through an executive order on Jan. 20, his first day in office, after the platform went dark briefly when a national ban took effect. The second was in April when White House officials believed they were nearing a deal to spin off TikTok into a new company with U.S. ownership that fell apart after China backed out following Trump’s tariff announcement.

Trump will sign an order extending deadline for TikTok's Chinese owner to sell app

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will sign an executive order this week to extend a deadline for TikTok’s Chinese owner to divest the popular video sharing app. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Trump's intention after Trump indicated earlier Tuesday he would “probably” make the move. Leavitt said in a statement Tuesday evening that “Trump does not want TikTok to go dark.” The extension will last for 90 days. Trump had signed an order in early April to keep TikTok running for an additional 75 days after a potential deal to sell the app to American owners was put on ice.

ROME (AP) — Police in Rome say an 80-year-old man drove a compact luxury Mercedes A Class sedan part way down the city's landmark Spanish Steps before getting stuck. Municipal police said in a statement that the driver tested negative for alcohol, and was cited on the spot for driving down the monument in Rome's historic center. The car was later removed by firefighters using a crane. The driver was not identified and it was not celar if the car was his. One of Rome’s most recognizable monuments, the Spanish Steps have never been intended for motor vehicles, although some thrill seekers tried their luck.

Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp from their devices

Iranian state television has urged people to remove WhatsApp from their smart phones, alleging without specific evidence that the messaging app gathered user information to send to Israel. WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, which means a service provider in the middle can't read messages. WhatsApp says it does not track users' precise location or personal messages and said it did not provide bulk information to any government. Iran had banned WhatsApp in 2022 following mass protests. It lifted the ban late last year.

In Oklahoma, Juneteenth highlights tribal slavery descendants' fight for recognition and citizenship

While many across the country recognize Juneteenth as the end to the institution of slavery in America in 1865, some tribal nations in Oklahoma continued to own slaves until the following year, 1866. Today, many of the descendants of those formerly enslaved people are still fighting for full citizenship within those tribal nations. For them, Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom for people of African descent and a reminder of their struggle to be fully embraced by Indigenous people with whom they share an ancestral heritage.

Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith contemplates increased security after shooting of Democratic lawmakers

Lawmakers are still reeling from the shooting that killed one Minnesota state legislator and her husband and severely wounded another and his wife. Even as authorities searched for the suspect in the shooting, the state's two U.S. Senators noted the attack was one of an increasing examples of political violence. Sen. Tina Smith said she was contemplating the previously unthinkable notion of regular security guards. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said people need to remember that politicians are human beings.
