We are proud to announce that Lake Trafford Elementary School media specialist Alma McDermott has been elected Secretary of REFORMA—the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking.

“I am honored and excited to have been chosen for this role,” shares McDermott, who as many in the community know, gives her all to her job and her students.

REFORMA, an affiliate of the American Library Association (ALA), actively promotes the development of library collections to include Spanish-language and Latino-oriented materials; the recruitment of more bilingual and bicultural library professionals and support staff; the development of library services and programs that meet the needs of the Latino community; the establishment of a national information and support network among individuals who share its goals; the education of the U.S. Latino population in regards to the availability and types of library services; and lobbying efforts to preserve existing library resource centers serving the interests of Latinos.

REFORMA oversees 20 active (and growing) chapters throughout the United States. In addition to McDermott’s duties as Secretary of REFORMA, she will be participating on a task force to restart the Florida chapter of REFORMA, called REFORMA de Florida.
