AAA issues storm warning for Florida drivers

Posted

TAMPA – AAA is urging drivers across Florida to exercise extreme caution as stormy weather threatens multiple regions of the state. With flash flooding and hail expected in some areas, AAA is providing essential safe driving tips and insurance advice to help residents and out-of-towners navigate hazardous conditions.

Florida has experienced an extended dry spell, meaning roads may be especially slick when rain arrives. Oil and debris accumulate on dry pavement, creating dangerous conditions when mixed with water. Additionally, Florida’s roads see a high volume of visitors unfamiliar with local driving challenges, making it even more critical for all motorists to stay alert.

“Rain doesn’t just reduce visibility, it changes road conditions completely,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “The best advice we can give is to slow down, drive cautiously, and never take chances with standing water.”

According to the Federal Highway Administration, wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million crashes annually. AAA recommends the following tips for staying safe on the road when it rains:

Safe Driving Tips for Severe Weather

  • Turn On Headlights – Visibility is reduced during storms. Use headlights to ensure other drivers can see you.
  • Avoid cruise control – It increases the risk of losing control in wet conditions.
  • Slow Down & Increase Following Distance – Wet roads reduce traction, increasing the risk of hydroplaning. Maintain extra space between vehicles.
  • Avoid Flooded Roads – Never attempt to drive through standing water. Just six inches can cause loss of control, and deeper water can stall your vehicle.
  • Watch for Hail – If hail begins to fall, seek shelter immediately. If driving, pull over to a safe location, preferably under cover.

Insurance Advice for Flooding & Hail Damage

 • Take Preventative Measures – Park vehicles in covered areas when possible to minimize hail damage. If flooding is imminent, move your car to higher ground.

 • Check for Comprehensive Coverage – Flooding and hail damage are typically covered under comprehensive auto insurance. Review your policy to confirm coverage.

 • Document Damage – If your vehicle is damaged, take photos and report the incident to your insurance provider as soon as possible.

 • Rental Car Coverage – If your vehicle is rendered inoperable due to storm damage, check if your policy includes rental car reimbursement.

"Severe weather can be unpredictable and dangerous, so please make safety a top priority," said Jenkins. "We urge all drivers to take precautions, avoid flooded areas, and ensure their insurance coverage is up to date."

AAA encourages all drivers to stay informed by monitoring local weather updates and emergency alerts. For additional safety resources, visit AAA’s website.
