Man suspected of shooting 2 Minnesota lawmakers caught, AP sources says

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. (AP) — The man suspected of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and wounding another has been taken into custody, bringing an end to a massive, nearly two-day search that put the entire state on edge. Vance Boelter was arrested Sunday evening.  Former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday in the northern Minneapolis suburbs. Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were injured at their Champlin home, about 9 miles (about 15 kilometers) away. Boelter was arrested in a rural area in Sibley County, southwest of Minneapolis.

A teenager with a job making burritos became a powerful Minnesota lawmaker who trained service dogs

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Melissa Hortman’s power as a Democratic leader to shape the course of a deeply divided Minnesota Legislature was a far cry from her job as a teenager making chili-cheese burritos and overshadowed her volunteer work training service dogs for veterans. The 55-year-old was a lifelong Minneapolis-area resident who went to college in Boston and then returned home for law school. She was elected to the Minnesota House in 2004 and helped pass a sweeping liberal program as its speaker in 2023.  The chamber was split evenly between Democrats and Republicans this year and she helped break a budget impasse. Friends and colleagues remembered her as grounded, kind and compassionate.

Political violence is threaded through recent US history. The motives and justifications vary

The attacks on two Democratic Minnesota state lawmakers at home are the latest in a grim spike in political violence. One lawmaker and her husband were killed while a second one and his wife were gravely wounded. Those attacks follow the firebombing of a march in Colorado calling for the release of hostages in Gaza, the killing of two Israeli embassy workers in Washington and the firebombing of the Pennsylvania governor's mansion. That's just in the past two months. Before that came the attempted assassination of Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, the attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband and a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice.

Israel and Iran trade strikes for a third day and threaten more to come. Over 230 are reported dead

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Israel and Iran have traded more missile attacks despite international calls for a halt to the fighting, with neither country showing signs of backing down as the conflict between the regional foes raged for a third day. Iran on Sunday said Israel struck its oil refineries, killed the intelligence chief of its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and two other generals and hit population centers in intensive aerial attacks that raised the death toll in the country since Israel launched its major campaign on Friday to 224 people. Israel, which has aimed its missiles at Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program and military leadership, said that that Iran has fired over 270 missiles since Friday, wreaking havoc on sleepy residential suburbs and killing 14 people.

Trump vetoed Israeli plan to kill Iran's supreme leader, US official tells AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump vetoed a plan presented to the U.S. in recent days to kill Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. The Israelis informed the Trump administration in recent days that it had developed a credible plan to kill Khamenei. After being briefed on the plan, the White House made clear to Israeli officials that Trump was opposed to the Israelis making the move. That's according to the official, who was not authorized to comment on the sensitive matter.

Remains of Air India crash victims are handed over to relatives

AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — Indian authorities have started handing over remains of the victims of one of India’s worst aviation disasters after identifying some through DNA tests. The Air India flight crashed shortly after takeoff Thursday and killed at least 270 people, including 29 on the ground, in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad. One passenger survived. Hundreds of relatives of the crash victims have provided DNA samples at the hospital. Most of the bodies were charred or mutilated, making them unrecognizable. Among the passengers, 169 were Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian.

G7 leaders gather in Canada for a summit overshadowed by Israel-Iran crisis and trade wars

KANANASKIS, Alberta (AP) — Leaders of some of the world’s biggest economic powers arrive in the Canadian Rockies for a Group of Seven summit that's been shadowed by an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and U.S. President Donald Trump’s unresolved trade war. Israel’s strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliation appeared to catch many world leaders unawares. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has decided to abandon the annual practice of issuing a joint statement. With other leaders wanting to talk to Trump in an effort to talk him out of slapping tariffs, the summit risks being a series of bilateral conversations rather than a show of unity.

Justice Department's early moves on voting and elections signal a shift from its traditional role

ATLANTA (AP) — The Trump administration's Justice Department has begun targeting Democratic and presidential swing states with demands for election data or changes to voter registration procedures. While the requests may seem technical and mundane, collectively they suggest the department is moving away from its traditional stance of protecting access to the ballot box. Instead, the actions address concerns that have been raised by a host of conservative activists following years of false claims surrounding elections in the U.S. By targeting certain states — presidential battlegrounds or those controlled by Democrats — they also could be foreshadowing an expanded role for the department in future elections.

Spaniards turn water pistols on visitors in Barcelona and Mallorca to protest mass tourism

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Water guns are back squirting at unsuspecting tourists in Barcelona. About a thousand Spaniards marched to demand a rethink of an economic model they believe is fueling a housing crunch and erasing the character of their city on Sunday. Several toted squirt guns and shot at would-be foreign visitors. Similar scenes took place when around 2,000 people rallied on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The marches were part of a coordinated effort by activists concerned with the ills of overtourism across southern Europe’s top destinations, including Venice, Italy and Portugal’s capital of Lisbon.

'How to Train Your Dragon' soars in box office debut with $83.7 million, beating 'Lilo & Stitch'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “How to Train Your Dragon” took flight at the box office this weekend, proving that some remakes still have teeth. According to Comscore estimates Sunday, the Universal live-action adaptation of the beloved animated franchise soared to a strong $83 million debut in North American theaters. The film is directed by franchise veteran Dean DeBlois and follows the unlikely friendship between a young Viking named Hiccup and a dragon called Toothless. It also claimed the No. 1 spot ahead of Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” which slipped to second place after topping the charts for three weekends.
