PORTHCAWL, Wales (AP) — Miyu Yamashita of Japan captured her first major title when she withstood a charge by Charley Hull by not making a bogey until the outcome of the Women’s British Open was no longer in doubt. She closed with a 2-under 70 on Sunday for a two-shot victory. Yamashita holed two big par putts on the back nine at Royal Porthcawl, the last one when Hull had closed to within one shot of the lead. Hull had to settle for a 69 to tie for second with Minami Katsu of Japan. Japanese players now have won four of the last nine majors in women’s golf. Mao Saigo won the first major of the year at the Chevron Championship.

Lewis Hamilton says he has 'a lot going on in the background' after another tough race

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A day after calling himself “useless,” Lewis Hamilton said he’s facing issues “in the background” after another difficult Formula 1 race. Hamilton finished 12th Sunday, the same place he’d qualified the day before. Hamilton told Sky Sports that “there’s a lot going on in the background that is not great." He didn't explain any further but said he has not lost his love of racing. Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc told Sky Sports he “spoke too quickly” during the race when he questioned the team's decision-making over the radio. Leclerc said he was later told the car had a chassis problem he didn't know about.

Chargers LB Denzel Perryman arrested on weapons charges and remains in jail

Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman has been arrested on weapons charges during a traffic stop for vehicle code violations. Los Angeles Sheriff's Department officials said Perryman was arrested Friday evening. Deputies discovered five firearms, including two assault weapons, in Perryman's vehicle. Perryman was cooperative during the stop. He was booked on felony charges and is being held without bond at the South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station. His agent confirmed he has not been released. Perryman is scheduled to appear at Inglewood Court on Tuesday. The Chargers said they are aware of the situation and are gathering information.

Celtics minority owner reaches deal to buy Connecticut Sun for record $325 million, AP source says

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — A group led by Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has reached a deal to buy the Connecticut Sun for a record $325 million and move the team to Boston, according to a person familiar with the sale. The franchise wouldn’t play in Boston until the 2027 season. Pagliuca also would contribute $100 million for a new practice facility in Boston for the team, the person said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Saturday because the deal hasn’t been publicly announced. The sale is pending approval of the league and its Board of Governors.

WNBA says fan was arrested for throwing sex toy in Atlanta, threatens ejection, ban moving forward

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA said Saturday that the individual who threw a sex toy on the court at an Atlanta Dream game earlier in the week was arrested and that any person throwing objects onto the court will be ejected from the arena and face a minimum one-year ban. The incident in Atlanta occurred late in the fourth quarter of the Dream’s game against Golden State on Tuesday in College Park, Georgia. On Friday, another sex toy was thrown in Chicago under a basket after a whistle was blown to stop play during the third quarter of Golden State's 73-66 victory over the Sky.

Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson arrested at Washington airport on a domestic violence offense

Reigning 100-meter world champion Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. A police report obtained by The Associated Press shows Richardson was arrested Sunday on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense. She ran in the opening round of the women’s 100 meters at U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon, on Thursday. She has an automatic bye to the world championships in September in Tokyo as the defending champion. USA Track and Field said it is aware of the situaton. Richardson’s agent did not immediately reply to an email request for comment.

Paula Deen has abruptly closed the Savannah restaurant that launched her to Food Network fame

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Former Food Network star Paula Deen has abruptly closed the Savannah, Georgia, restaurant she started with her two sons nearly three decades ago. Deen said in a statement Friday on her website and on social media that she and sons Jamie and Bobby Deen had made a “heartfelt decision” to close The Lady & Sons, which they opened in downtown Savannah in 1996. She also shut down an attached takeout business called The Chicken Box. No reason was given. Deen said four restaurants she owns in Tennessee, South Carolina and Missouri will remain open. Deen's flagship Savannah restaurant helped launch her to fame. Her Food Network show premiered in 2002 and ran for a decade.

Amusement park ride in Saudi Arabia collapses and injures more than 20 people

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — State media outlets in Saudi Arabia say that the collapse of an amusement park ride has left more than 20 people injured, and has prompted authorities to close the park and order an investigation. The accident occurred in the city of Taif on Wednesday, when the “360 Big Pendulum” ride snapped in two, sending the part carrying people crashing to the ground. Video footage posted on social media showed the pendulum swinging riders, who were strapped into their seats, in a wide arc several times before the pendulum arm snaps, sending the passenger section crashing to the ground.
