The Los Angeles Dodgers slugger has posted on Instagram that his wife gave birth to a girl. “Congratulations Sho!” Manager Dave Roberts proclaimed while saying he wasn’t sure what the baby’s name was. The 30-year-old Ohtani missed the first two games of the series matching the past two World Series champions.

Queen Elizabeth II's favorite dog breed race for glory in the UK's Corgi Derby

LONDON (AP) — Some of the fastest canines on four very short legs have raced for glory in Scotland’s annual Corgi Derby. The Musselburgh Racecourse Corgi Derby was first held in 2022 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne. The late monarch was a devoted corgi fan who owned almost 30 of the breed over the decades. Four-year-old Juno beat a 16-strong field of dashing dogs dressed in bright sweaters over the 230-foot race on Saturday. The winner was were presented with a trophy and dog treats by tennis coach Judy Murray, mother of Scottish star Andy Murray.

Pupy the elephant arrives at a Brazil sanctuary after 30 years in Argentine zoo

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Pupy the elephant has arrived at her new home in a sanctuary in Mato Grosso, Brazil, following a 2,700-kilometer journey from a zoo converted into an ecological park in Argentina’s capital where she had spent 30 years in conditions criticized by activists. The Buenos Aires mayor’s office said the last elephant living in the Argentine city’s “Ecopark” arrived at her destination located in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest “in perfect health.” The 35-year-old African elephant was transported in a large iron crate with thick bars strapped to a truck, a mission for which she had been trained for several months.

Canadian drummer arrested on child sexual abuse material charges in California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joseph Seiders, drummer for Canadian indie rock band The New Pornographers, has been arrested and charged with possessing child sex abuse materials. Authorities say Seiders is accused of recording young boys with his phone at a Chick-fil-A bathroom in Palm Desert, California. He was arrested April 9 after sheriff's deputies responded to two reports of suspicious activity at the fast food restaurant. The New Pornographers said on Instagram that they have immediately severed ties with Seiders, who joined the band in 2014. Authorities believe there may be more victims and are still investigating.

Gregg Popovich has medical incident in restaurant, is resting at home, AP source says

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich is doing well at home after needing medical attention earlier this week following an incident at a restaurant. That's according to a person with knowledge of the matter said who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because neither Popovich nor the team released any details publicly. The 76-year-old Popovich, who missed most of this season while recovering from what the Spurs called a mild stroke, was at a restaurant in San Antonio on Tuesday night when he began not feeling well. TMZ Sports obtained video footage of what it said was Popovich being placed into an ambulance.

NHL sets another attendance record, topping 23 million fans for the 1st time

NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL has set another attendance record and surpassed 23 million fans for the first time. The league reported an attendance figure of 23,014,458 over the 1,312-game regular season. That represents 96.9% capacity over 32 teams with the Montreal Canadiens making up the biggest share thanks to 41 home sellouts with crowds of more than 21,000. It's the third consecutive year the 108-year-old NHL has broken attendance records after 22.4 million fans in 2022-23 and 22.9 million last season. That does not include the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal and Boston, which drew an average of more than 19,000 fans a game.

NASA's Lucy spacecraft is speeding toward another close encounter with an asteroid

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA's Lucy spacecraft will soon swoop past a small asteroid. It will be the second asteroid encounter for Lucy, launched in 2021 on a quest that will take it to 11 space rocks. Its ultimate destination is the unexplored swarms of asteroids out near Jupiter. NASA considers Sunday's flyby a dress rehearsal for 2027 when Lucy reaches its first so-called Trojan asteroid near Jupiter. Looking on from Mission Control in Colorado will be paleontologist Donald Johanson, who discovered the Lucy fossil 50 years ago. The asteroid is named for him.

3 tourists among 4 killed after Italian cable car crashes into a ravine south of Naples

ROME (AP) — Three tourists, including a British couple, were among four people who were killed when a mountain cable car plunged into a ravine south of Naples. Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said in a statementthat it is “ supporting the families of a British couple who have died in Italy and are in touch with the local authorities.” On Friday, a spokesperson for the mayor of Vico Equense had said that the pair had been siblings, but confirmed Saturday that that was based on bad information. An Israeli woman was the third foreign victim to be identified following Thursday’s accident. The fourth victim was the Italian driver of the cable car.

Lee Corso to retire from ESPN's 'College GameDay' after four-decade run

Lee Corso’s nearly four-decade run on ESPN’s “College GameDay” is coming to an end. Corso, the longtime ESPN broadcaster and former coach widely known for his endearing expressions and elaborate headgear picks, is set to retire after a career with the show that began in 1987, ESPN announced. His final broadcast will be Aug. 30 — Week 1 of the 2025 college football season — the network said, adding that additional programming to celebrate Corso is also planned.

Haley Joel Osment charged with cocaine possession and being drunk in public

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. (AP) — Oscar-nominated actor Haley Joel Osment has been charged with public intoxication and cocaine possession after his arrest earlier this month at a Northern California ski resort. The Mono County District Attorney’s office announced the misdemeanor charges Thursday against the actor, who as a child starred in the movies “The Sixth Sense” and “A.I.” The actor was arrested April 8 at the Mammoth Mountain ski resort on suspicion of public intoxication, District Attorney David Anderson said in a news release. The 37-year-old is due to be arraigned on July 7. His representative has not returned a message seeking comment on the charges Thursday.
