OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee woman was charged with burglary with assault after allegedly attacking two women over a set of steps.
Cynthia Phillips, 59, was arrested Sept. 6 by Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputies Tyler Cox and Skylar Casian just before 5 p.m.
According to the arrest report, Phillips was standing in the road at the Summer Breeze RV Park when the deputies arrived. She was next to a set of steps. She told the deputies she sold a set of steps to a neighbor and now wanted to trade those steps for the steps out by the road. She said when she went over to ask her neighbor to trade, another woman grabbed her by the throat and threw her out of the residence.
When the deputies went to the neighbor’s residence though, they heard a different story. The three women inside said Phillips came over while they were trying to help the lady who lived there pack a suitcase because the resident had a broken arm. They said Phillips was asked to leave but came back soon after, carrying the steps she wanted to trade. Looking at the steps, the women decided they were not in very good condition and said the resident would not trade. The women said this made Phillips angry and she yanked the door open, shoving two of the women out of the way saying she was coming in to get the steps. The women said together, they were able to get her out of the residence.
After a deputy told Phillips it was illegal to force her way into someone’s home to retrieve property that was no longer hers, Phillips reportedly said the steps were technically still hers because the other woman had not finished paying for them yet.
Bond was set at $20,000.
