Bicyclist hit by semi in intersection of SR 70 and US 441

OKEECHOBEE – A 30-year-old Lehigh Acres bicyclist was struck by a semi in Okeechobee’s main intersection of State Road 70 and U.S. 441, at 6:19 a.m. on Sept. 2, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Lehigh Acres man was riding a Cannondale M300 bicycle. The 2023 Mack Granite truck-tractor with a 2021 Utility flatbed trailer was driven by a 60-year-old Port St. Lucie man.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, the bicyclist was traveling west on State Road 70, attempting to cross US Highway 441. A truck-tractor and semi-trailer combination was turning right from westbound State Road 70 to northbound US Highway 441.

The right side of the semi-trailer collided with the bicyclist within the intersection.

The bicyclist was transported to HCA Florida Raulerson Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 6:47 a.m.

The truck driver did not stop at the scene but was located at a sod farm approximately 5 miles from the crash scene along with the truck. He did not report any injuries.

The Traffic Homicide Investigation is ongoing.
