OKEECHOBEE – At their Oct. 8 meeting, the Okeechobee County Board of County Commissioners approved rezoning of a 74-acre Wolff Farms property where a 199-home housing development is planned. At that meeting, commissioners said state law gave them no choice because the zoning was in compliance with the county’s future land use map and the land development regulations.
A petition online at Change.org opposes that development.
The petition titled “Protect Okeechobee: Stop the 199-home High Density Development on 74 acres of SW 28th Street” had attracted 429 signatures as of Oct. 15.
“The fight is far from over,” the petition states. “The developer still has to pass permitting, traffic mitigation and final site plan approval before a single shovel hits the dirt.
“We the residents of Okeechobee, demand that the commission hold Lennar Homes to the highest level of scrutiny or reject the final site plan approval before a single shovel hits the dirt.”
The petition notes potential issues with the wetland and ecological impact, flawed traffic data, flooding risk, environmental destruction and incompatible HOA models.
The petition was started by Stephanie Peleaz.
