Their most recent tournament win on June 27, came in dramatic fashion with the Dirtbags pulling off comeback victories in the semifinal and final.
In the semifinal the Dirtbags were down 5-1 in the last inning, but were able to tie the game and force extra innings. It was then that Ruben Guerrero connected on a game winning hit to send the Dirtbags to the championship.
In the championship game, Chobee was down again, this time 7-1 to Sebring’s Heartland Select. Still, the Dirtbags came back and scored eight runs, with Eddie Baldwin getting the walkoff RBI.
“It’s been different kids stepping up and finding ways to win,” said Dirtbags coach Ruben Eric Guerrero. “Yesterday it was Eddie, but the other day it was David Busbin coming up huge. I’ll be honest, the bottom of the order carried us.”
It wasn’t just the bats that kept the Dirtbags alive in the tournament, a few momentum changing defensive plays helped kickstart the comeback victories.
“Kylar Koedam probably made the biggest play of the day,” said Guerrero. “We were losing 5-1 at the time and he fielded the ball in right-center field, turned around and threw an absolute dart to third base to get out Palm Beach’s lead off runner. That just got everybody going. Everyone was fired up.”
Both tournament were held in Vero Beach, with the Dirtbags attempting to keep travel at a minimum as they continue to save for their upcoming trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
On July 17-18 the Dirtbags will play in their next tournament being held again in Vero Beach.
