County working with FDOT for traffic light at SR 70 and N.E. 128th Avenue

OKEECHOBEE – Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) did an additional field review and is moving forward with plans to add a traffic signal at the intersection of State Road 70 and N.E. 128th Avenue, Assistant County Administrator Justin Nelson reported at the Oct. 8 meeting of the Okeechobee County Commission.

“They are working through the details,” Nelson explained. “At this time, they are saying the signal is warranted.”

“We got a federal funds appropriation for $1 million,” he said. “We would like to use that money to expedite that project.” FDOT is investigating that now.

He said FDOT is also evaluating the traffic light problems at Okeechobee High School.

Nelson said the county is working with FDOT to put a left turn signal on the light at the intersection of Wolff Road and U.S. 441. “We’ve been trying for multiple years to get left turn signal put in for that light,” he said. “It did sound promising they will help us get that light changed out.”

He said when they previously conducted a traffic study there, it was not during school hours. “That is why the count did not warrant a signal,” he said.
