OKEECHOBEE — On May 14 at 10 a.m., Habitat for Humanity St. Lucie & Okeechobee, Inc. (HFHSLO) will celebrate its first groundbreaking ceremony in Okeechobee County since expanding its service area to include the county.

The ceremony will be held at 503 NE 15th Avenue, thanks to a generous grant from the South Florida PGA. Construction of the new home is scheduled to begin in Fall 2026, with applications for the future homeowner opening around the same time.

Driven by the belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live, HFHSLO was founded in 1996 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. As a Christian housing organization and one of the leading global nonprofits working in more than 70 countries, Habitat for Humanity partners with families and individuals to help them build strength, stability, and self-reliance through safe and affordable housing.

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, HFHSLO has built or rehabilitated more than 100 homes and repaired over 180 homes in the St. Lucie and Okeechobee communities. Through shelter, we empower.
