IRSC launches Florida’s first electric vehicle certification program

Posted

FORT PIERCE — Indian River State College is proud to announce the launch of Florida’s first certificate program in Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Maintenance, addressing the growing demand for skilled technicians in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle industry.

The new 24-credit certificate program, set to begin in Fall 2025, was developed in direct response to requests from local employers seeking qualified technicians with specialized knowledge in electric vehicle systems. Registration opens in May 2025.

“This program represents our commitment to meeting evolving workforce needs in the Treasure Coast region,” said Dr. Timothy E. Moore, President of Indian River State College. “As electric vehicles continue to gain market share, we are providing students with the skills necessary to excel in this high-growth field.”

The certificate courses are fully embedded within Indian River State College’s Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Automotive Technology, allowing students to apply these credits toward the full degree if desired. Additionally, the standalone certificate offers former graduates an opportunity to return to Indian River State College to update their skills for the electric vehicle era.

The curriculum includes four specialized courses focusing on the theory and practical knowledge needed to safely work with hybrid and electric vehicles. Two courses include hands-on laboratory components, providing students with valuable practical experience.

Industry projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate a 20% increase in jobs in the electric vehicle sector over the next decade, with these positions typically offering higher wages than traditional automotive service roles.

“Our advisory committee members have emphasized that graduates with knowledge of battery management and electric powertrain systems are preferred candidates,” said Heather Belmont, Indian River State College Provost. “This certificate program will give our students a competitive edge while recognizing that manufacturer-specific training will complement their education.”
