OKEECHOBEE — Earlier today (March 6), Sheriff Noel Stephen had the privilege of awarding Deputy Sheriff K9 Handler Karson Reno with one of the highest honors in law enforcement - the Valor Award.
During the last hurricane that struck our area, a devastating tornado tore through the Spanish Lakes Area of St. Lucie County, leaving a path of destruction, injury, and loss of life.
In response, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office issued a mutual aid request, calling upon surrounding agencies for assistance. Without hesitation, Deputy Reno was among the brave men and women who answered that call.
His selfless actions that evening—amid chaos and tragedy—were vital in the response efforts. Unfortunately, his involvement was initially overlooked, preventing him from being recognized at the 2024 End-of-Year Awards Ceremony.
Today, we correct that oversight and publicly honor him for his courage and service.
The dedication of all emergency responders that night undoubtedly saved lives, not only in Okeechobee but across the storm-ravaged areas. Their unwavering commitment to service over self is seen daily, yet too often goes unrecognized.
Today, we take a moment to acknowledge and express our deepest gratitude for their sacrifices. K9 Handler Karson Reno received the award from Sheriff Noel Stephen in front of his wife and family.
