OKEECHOBEE — The Adam Bryant Minimal Regatta, Okeechobee’s own homemade boat race, will be held Oct. 3 at the Scott Driver boat ramps at the mouth of the Kissimmee River. Contestants must build their own boats from the materials provided: one sheet of plywood, three 2” x 4” boards, 1 pound of screws and a roll of duct tape.
The regatta honors the memory of Adam Bryant, who was paralyzed in an accident while on a camping trip and died a few years later, explained organizer J.D. Mixon of the Okeechobee Kiwanis Club. It was Adam’s dream to be a firefighter/EMT.
Money raised from the boat sponsorships will go towards sending a young person to Firefighter/EMT School, college scholarships, and other charitable activities of For Okeechobee, Inc., including proposed construction of a special needs playground.

The regatta theme in 2014 was "things that begin with A," thus, Aircraft Carrier.
Mandatory boat check-in will be on Friday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at C. Scott Driver Park, 10100 West State Road 78. Dinner and entertainment will begin at 7 p.m.
The dinner is open to the public. Dinner tickets may be purchased for $7 at the event or $5 in advance. The Captain’s Dinner will conclude with a fireworks show at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, races will be held at C. Scott Driver Park starting at 9 a.m. sharp. There is no charge to come and watch the races. A big part of the fun is trying to figure out which of the homemade boats will sink — and some always do.
Food and drinks on Saturday will be served at a “Minimal” cost. Race spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
