MOORE HAVEN- The Moore Haven Lady Terrier varsity volleyball team is back on the court, getting ready for their upcoming season.
The Lady Terriers are coming off a history making season last year. They earned their first regional championship in school history. And that championship came on the heels of the first ever district championship for the team.
The Lady Terriers won the district championship on their home court with wins over Glades Day and Marathon. The Lady Terriers defeated Glades Day in the district semifinal 3-0. Tiyanni Anderson and senior Akeelah Ling led the Lady Terriers with 12 kills each in the semifinal match. Senior Preslynn Baker has a team leading 20 assists.
Then Moore Haven beat Marathon 3-1 to take the district championship.
In the regional tournament the Lady Terriers defeated Chiefland 3-1 in the semifinal.
In the regional final Moore Haven beat Williston 3-0, but each one of those sets were close. The Lady Terriers won the first set 25-22, second set 25-20, and third set 25-23, with Ling and Anderson leading the team in kills.
Moore Haven lost big time contributors like Preslynn Baker and Akeelah Ling after last season. Baker earned the Rural Player of the Year award from the Florida Athletic Coaches Association last season. She committed to Earlham College in Indiana following graduation. Ling led the team in blocks and was one of the top scorers for Moore Haven.
But the Lady Terriers have playmakers like Tiyanni Anderson, Brooklyn Sergent, and Tahnia Billie retuning. Anderson led the team in kills last season as a junior with 191. Sergent had 91 kills for Moore Haven last year. Last season’s leader in assists, Baker, had 410 assists. The Lady Terriers will need players like Billie and Kulpia Julian to replace that kind of production.
Moore Haven will host Sebring on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. The Lady Terriers will be on the road to face LaBelle on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m.
