The Health Department’s Healthy Start program has seen an extreme increase in needs for mothers and infants, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Locally, they have distributed over 111,400 free diapers in the last 3 months. The need for diapers continues to increase.

When the LaBelle Kiwanis heard about it, they jumped in to help, “We gave $300 to purchase diapers for the local children in need. The Health Department’s Healthy Start is the receiving agency to manage the diapers being handed out,” reported Kiwanis President, Mary Pringle. “The funds are from Kiwanis club of LaBelle’s Priority One project.”

LaBelle Kiwanis has not only donated money to the Hendry County’s Healthy Start program, they have also organized a Diaper Drive during the Grand Re-opening of their thrift store.

“We will have a diaper drive July 25, the opening of the thrift store, so that no child in LaBelle isn’t provided for,” said Pringle.

During the Diaper Drive, each person that brings a bag of diapers for the local Healthy Start program will receive a discount coupon for 25% off their purchase and a chance to win a special grand prize. There will also be tables of information, music, and bargains galore.

Kiwanis is a world renown organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. When asked how else people can help, Pringle explained that all of the donated funds that are given, from Kiwanis to local organizations, are generated from people shopping at the LaBelle Kiwanis Thrift Store. The store’s proceeds all go back to help the community.

“Shopping at LaBelle Kiwanis thrift store is the number one way to help!” Pringle added, “Join the LaBelle Kiwanis club, to do hands-on help. Come to events to support our mission.”

The LaBelle Kiwanis Thrift Store is located at 155 S. Bridge Street, in LaBelle. Currently the store is open Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Starting during the grand opening this weekend, July 25, they will be open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
