This was a surplus fleet vehicle that was being retired from Sheriff’s Office service and had limited trade-in value. However, while its value to the OCSO fleet had diminished, the vehicle still had the potential to provide something much more valuable to an organization serving the community: Reliable transportation.
Chobee Clubhouse works with individuals who can sometimes be overlooked by society, helping them regain stability, develop a healthy support system, return to the workforce, and become productive and involved members of our community.
Sheriff Stephen recognizes that successful reintegration into the community, meaningful employment, dependable transportation, and a strong network of support can all play an important role in helping prevent individuals from entering or returning to the criminal justice system.
Rather than looking at this simply as the donation of a retired vehicle, the Sheriff saw an opportunity to take a resource that had reached the end of its useful service to the OCSO and allow it to continue serving Okeechobee County in a different way.
The goal is to support an organization that is helping people move forward, become more self-sufficient, establish healthier lifestyles, and return to the workforce. When members of the community succeed, the entire community benefits, he explained.
