OKEECHOBEE —The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office is currently on scene (March 9) in the 6300 block of NE 8th Way following an officer involved shooting involving two of our deputies.
Prior to deputies arriving on scene, the responding sergeant requested our Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT). CNT stands for Crisis Negotiation Team and responds to incidents involving individuals in crisis in an effort to safely de-escalate situations.
During the incident, deputies encountered an armed individual to the rear of the property. Deputies gave several verbal commands for the individual to drop the firearm, however the individual did not comply.
Deputies were confronted by the armed individual and, for their safety, discharged their duty weapons, striking the individual.
The suspect has been pronounced deceased. Neither of the deputies were injured.
The incident remains under active investigation. Additional information will be released once the preliminary investigation is complete.
