OKEECHOBEE – North Elementary School is making waves this week as over 180 students from grades K-5 dive into swim lessons at the Darrell Enfinger Sports Complex pool. The initiative aims to teach the essential skills of swimming and water safety, ensuring that children in the community are well-equipped for a lifetime of safety around water.
Under the guidance of teachers Kacy Hackett and Cory Dobbins, students will participate in two swimming sessions this week, benefiting from the expertise of a certified water safety instructor through the American Red Cross. This program not only provides children with vital swimming skills but also emphasizes the importance of safety in and around water.
Matthew Gammill, Parks and Recreation Manager, expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, "We are excited to support North Elementary School in this important initiative. The pool is available for all schools to use, and we encourage other educational institutions to take advantage of this resource. Teaching our children how to swim is an investment in their safety and well-being."
The collaboration between Okeechobee County Parks and Recreation and North Elementary is set to inspire confidence and encourage a love for swimming among young learners. As the program unfolds, both students and educators look forward to making memorable experiences at the pool while gaining essential skills that could save lives.
