Reflections from the Pulpit: Combatting pride

Posted

“A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.” -Proverbs 29:23

Pride is in all of us, and for most, whether you recognize it or not, it is a sin we struggle with the most.

I know I do!

When pride rears its ugly head, I must immediately go to the Lord and ask God to help me through His Spirit to defeat this sin. Spiritually, I must pray.

The Holy Spirit is the only person who can rid me of my pride. But I must humble myself by going to Him in order for His power to work in me.

If I resist the Holy Spirit because of my pride, God’s word says, He will resist me, but He goes on to say, He gives grace to the humble.

Grace allows me to put to death my pride because it was God’s grace through His Son Jesus that I now have the power to do so.

If I don’t persistently practice spiritually discipline in my life when it comes to sin, then there is no room for God to work in me. I have quenched the Spirit of God and I no longer respond to His voice.

Pride can destroy your relationship with God, as well as with those you love.
I must practice training my mind, attitude and temper so that the same outcome does not keep occurring when pride appears. It’s a life-long process of continuous practice of changing my mind (repentance), changing my heart and attitude.

When pride shows up in my life, I must immediately recognize it, come up with a plan to remove it, and remember that plan every time it decides to come back up.

God’s plan is communion with Him.
God has given us an escape route in every temptation, and He has given us two powerful tools to fight against our sins.

Prayer and His word.
When we pray, we are, “In the Spirit.” When we are in prayer with God, it’s as if the Spirit of God and us become one and there is no pride in God.

Prayers fight against pride.

The second thing that combats pride is God’s word.

The Bible is sharper than any double-edged sword, and it’s the only armor that we use on the offense.

When we are in God’s word, it’s as if God is literally speaking to us and fighting for us in our times of temptations. It’s what Jesus used when He was tempted three times in the desert…” It is written…”

Each day, I must recognize my sins and pray to God that He helps me to surrender, deny myself and pick up my cross to follow Him. I must not only pick up my cross but pick up my Bible and fight against the sins that are forming in me every day.

Easier said than done but doing nothing definitely does not work.

Stay humble.
