Wisdom was God’s method when He created the heavens and the earth.
“The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He establish the heavens; by His knowledge the depths were broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.” – Proverbs 3:19-20.
According to the Bible, wisdom’s existence predates all of creation. Wisdom is seen as an independent creative power which founded the earth and established the heavens.
But what or who is wisdom?
Surely, this is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ!
In Proverbs, Solomon uses such words as, “wisdom,” “knowledge” and “understanding” interchangeably, to describe the heart and mind of the person who truly knows God.
The word “fool” (which appears in Proverbs over 50x), does not refer to the mentally deficient, but to the person who leaves God out of their thoughts and plans, and who cares not whether their conduct pleases or displeases Him.
In contrast, the “wise” are not the highly educated, but those who seek to put God first in their lives. They believe God and are clothed with His righteousness.
Wisdom can be seen as knowing things from God’s perspective. Wisdom is experiential knowledge of the Lord personally. Wisdom is loving what God loves (holiness) and hating the things God hates (sin).
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” – Proverbs 4:7
Repeatedly, Solomon exhorts His son, the reader, to heed the instructions of the person Wisdom (Proverbs 1:20), who is the Lord, and to walk the path of wisdom, which the life of holiness. This appeal is repeated in the first nine chapters of Proverbs which mainly describe who the wise man is—the one who fears God.
The reason for this repetition? Well, Solomon knows that exhortations about daily conduct are meaningless to one whose heart is not right with God. Hence his constant appeal for a teachable attitude is suggested by such words as “hear,” “receive,” “seek,” “forget not” and “attend.”
Whenever you are about to make a decision, ask yourself, “Is this wise?” Go to the Lord and ask Him.
“Now if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask from God, the ONE giving generously to all and not finding fault, and it will be given to him.” - James 1:5
God is pleased if we come to Him first. By faith we should be able to ask for anything according to His will and receive it. But if we doubt, God tells us we are “unstable” to receive the thing we ask.
“But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” – James 1:6-8.
So, when you pray, pray for wisdom. When you seek to make a decision, seek wisdom. When you need wisdom, ask for God to give you wisdom. And when you receive wisdom, know how to apply it daily to your life.
May God bless you and give you the wisdom to choose Him!
