OKEECHOBEE – Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers that failing to stop for a school bus that is dropping off or picking up students can result in a $338 fine.
The first week in March, OCSO issued seven citations for drivers who failed to stop for a school bus on State Road 70 West in front of La Fiesta Super Market. The bus was actively picking up or dropping off students when the vehicles passed.
Even if the roadway has a painted center line or turn lane, you must still stop for a school bus with its stop arm extended and lights activated if there is no physical median or barrier wall separating the lanes. Florida law requires vehicles traveling in both directions to stop for school buses in these situations.
