SW 67th Drive to get speed monitoring signs

Posted

OKEECHOBEE – Two speed monitoring signs will be installed on Southwest 67th Drive. The action was approved by Okeechobee County Commissioners at their March 13 meeting.

The signs will be solar-powered.

“This was asked for by a number of residents,” said Commissioner Terry Burroughs, whose district includes that neighborhood. “They didn’t like the rumble strips we put out.

“They didn’t like them, so they started running off the road to avoid them and running into people’s yards,” explained Burroughs. “So, we took them out.”

“SW 67th Drive is like a race track,” said Burroughs. “SW Ninth Street is like a race track.” He said the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office Wolf Pack should be out there writing tickets.

“I have calls about the rumble strips,” said Commissioner Frank DeCarlo. He said residents complain about the noise from the strips when cars don’t slow down and run over the strips.
