OKEECHOBEE — After his car was found in a ditch, a driver was charged with DUI.
On Friday evening, Feb. 26 at about 7:30 p.m. Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Francisco Hernandez was dispatched to the 9400 block of U.S. 441 North in reference to a traffic crash.
According to Hernandez’ report, he saw a white Honda in the ditch on the northbound side of the highway. The vehicle was approximately 30 feet from the road and had driven through several bushes. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Raymond John Smith, 53, Northeast 208th Street.
A witness said he had been driving behind Smith for several miles and observed him driving erratically, swerving all over the road and even into the grass. He said the accident occurred when Smith swerved and was unable to regain control of his car. The witness stopped his truck and called 911 before helping Smith out of the car.
A second witness verified the first witness’ account.
Heranadez notes Smith had slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol. His eyes were red and watery, and he was swaying back and forth.
Smith reportedly refused to give a breath sample. He was charged with DUI, and his bond was set at $1,000.
