OKEECHOBEE – Kiwanis Park is on track to be upgraded with about $70,000 worth of new playground equipment.
At the July 10 meeting, Angie Griffin, president of Okeechobee Main Street, requested the county commission to accept a donation to support the installation of a wheelchair accessible playground feature to be located at Kiwanis Park.
Previously the Kiwanis Club of Okeechobee had also pledged up to $20,000 toward the project.
In June 2026 Okeechobee Main Street was awarded a $50,000 T-Mobile Hometown Grant.
County staff obtained a quote of $74,007.87 from Rep Services, Inc. for the equipment.
The following funding sources will be applied to the purchase and installation of the equipment:
The playground upgrades are part of the Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant awarded to the county for several projects at Kiwanis Park. The value of the equipment provided by the Okeechobee Main Street and the Kiwanis Club of Okeechobee will be used as part of the 1:1 match required from the county for that grant funding.
Griffin said Christina Honeycutt wrote the grant application. “There were 911 applications, and we received the grant for the full $50,000,” she explained.
“We think it will be a great asset to the park to have wheelchair accessible equipment,” she said.
Sheriff Noel Stephen, Okeechobee Kiwanis Club president, said the new equipment “will allow the most used park we have in our county to grow and serve more children.”
