OKEECHOBEE — A woman was thrown from the back of a pickup truck last week at the Brahma Bull Restaurant. Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Misei Esquivel was dispatched to the restaurant at approximately 5 a.m., after a 911 call regarding a traffic crash. Dispatch advised her a car had hit several vehicles and a pedestrian. The driver, later identified as Kyle Selwyn, 25, was trapped in the vehicle after running into the bushes behind the restaurant.
When Esquivel arrived, she made contact with several people, who led her to a woman they said had been hit. Witnesses said the woman had a head injury, but she said she felt fine except for an injured arm.
Esquivel went to check on the driver of the truck and found him climbing out. He reportedly told her he was OK but said he could not open his eyes or feel his teeth. According to Esquivel’s report, Selwyn began screaming at people and said he hoped the woman who was hit would die. Then, Selwyn pointed at another man and accused him of hitting him. He ran at the man, screaming.
When asked for his version of events, Selwyn reportedly said he and the woman had been arguing and when he got in his truck to leave, she jumped in the back. He drove off too fast and lost control of his vehicle. He said he knew he hit something and came back to check on her, but people came running up to beat him up because she flew out of the back of his truck. He tried to get away and ran into the bushes.
A witness said the woman flew out of the back of the truck, and the truck would have run over her if the bouncer had not moved her.
Esquivel’s report notes Selwyn hit three vehicles before running into the bushes.
He was charged with three counts DUI causing property damage. He was also issued a citation for reckless driving. His bond was set at $4,500.
