Program offers education to low-income farm workers

BELLE GLADE — If you or any of your family members are a farm worker who would like to get education or training that enable them to find permanent year-round employment, the Palm Beach County Farmworker Career Development Program (FCDP) wants to hear from you.

The program is a service provided by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Community Services through Palm Beach County offices in West Palm Beach and Belle Glade. Those eligible are seasonal or migrant farm workers who are U.S. citizens or legal residents of the United States, are low-income or receiving public assistance, make at least 50 percent of their income or spend 50 percent or more of their work time in agricultural labor, or have done some farm work, a minimum of 25 days in the previous two years.

The FCDP can help such workers in several ways:

• Provide vocational training;
• Assist workers needing to improve their reading and math skills;
• Refer participants to English or General Educational Development classes leading toward a high school diploma;
• Place students in work experience situations for a period of time; and
• Help people prepare for a particular job.

If you are not eligible but know someone who is or was a farmworker, working in a packing house or a nursery, who could be helped by these services, you’re asked to inform that person of their potential eligibility.

To inquire about the program or complete a pre-application and get an eligibility evaluation, stop by the county FCDP office at 607 S. Main St., Suite 103, in Belle Glade, or call 561-992-7405.
