Gunman started Idaho blaze and then fatally shot 2 firefighters in ambush attack, officials say

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Authorities say a man armed with a rifle started a wildfire and then began shooting at first responders in a northern Idaho mountain community, killing two firefighters and wounding a third.   The gunman was later found dead with a weapon nearby. A shelter-in-place order was lifted Sunday night after a tactical response team used cell phone data to “hone in” on a wooded area with flames swiftly approaching where they found the suspect’s body with a firearm nearby. Officials did not release his name.

Debate is underway in the Senate on Trump's big bill, but overnight voting is delayed

WASHINGTON (AP) — Debate has been underway late into the night in the Senate on President Donald Trump’s big tax breaks and spending cuts package. Democrats warning against cuts to Medicaid and food stamps are trying to stall the process. There's much more debate and voting ahead. But Republicans postponed a planned overnight session until later Monday morning. They are determined to march forward to meet Trump's July Fourth deadline. Meantime, a new analysis shows the package will add nearly $3.3 trillion to deficits. And North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis, who said he can't vote for the bill because of its health care cuts, says he won't run again in 2026, after Trump lashed out.

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina won't run in 2026 after opposing Trump's bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina says he won't seek reelection. That news Sunday comes one day after he announced his opposition to President Donald Trump’s tax breaks and spending cuts package because of its reductions to health care programs. The announcement from the two-term senator surprised senior Republicans with its timing, but not necessarily the substance. Tillis had planned to announce his reelection plans later this year, likely September at the latest, but had been heavily leaning in favor of retiring. That's according to a person close to the senator who was granted anonymity to discuss internal dynamics. His decision creates a political opportunity for Democrats seeking to bolster their numbers in the 2026 midterm elections.

CIA chief told lawmakers Iran nuclear program set back years with strikes on metal conversion site

WASHINGTON (AP) — CIA Director John Ratcliffe has told skeptical U.S. lawmakers that American military strikes destroyed Iran’s lone metal conversion facility and delivered a monumental setback to Tehran’s nuclear program that will take years to overcome. That's according to a U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive intelligence. Ratcliffe also told lawmakers at a classified hearing last week that the intelligence community assessed the vast majority of Iran's amassed enriched uranium likely remains buried at Isfahan and Fordo nuclear facilities. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran's capabilities have been “destroyed to an important degree” but “some is still standing.”

Trump says he's not planning to extend a pause on global tariffs beyond July 9

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he's not planning to extend a 90-day pause on tariffs on most nations beyond July 9. He says his administration will notify countries that the trade penalties will take effect unless there are deals with the United States. During a wide-ranging interview with Fox News Channel's “Sunday Morning Futures,” the Republican president also said a group of investors will step forward within weeks to announce a plan to buy TikTok. And he floated the idea of giving some relief to hotels and farms reeling from immigration raids.

Star witness against Kilmar Abrego Garcia won't be deported, court records show

WASHINGTON (AP) — Court records show that the Trump administration has agreed to spare from deportation a key witness in the federal prosecution of Kilmar Abrego Garcia in exchange for his cooperation in the case. Jose Ramon Hernandez Reyes has been convicted of smuggling migrants and illegally reentering the United States after having been deported. Records reviewed by The Washington Post show that Hernandez Reyes has been released early from federal prison to a halfway house and has been given permission to stay in the U.S. for at least a year. Prosecutors have identified Hernandez Reyes as the “first cooperator” in the case against Abrego, according to court filings.

Trump calls for a Gaza ceasefire deal as some Palestinians are skeptical

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump is urging a ceasefire deal on the war in Gaza. An Israeli official says plans are underway for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to travel to Washington in the coming weeks. A top adviser is already heading there for discussions. Some weary Palestinians are skeptical about the chances. Nearly 21 months have passed since the war began with a Hamas-led attack. Israel on Sunday ordered evacuations in northern areas of Gaza during intensifying military operations. Hundreds of thousands of people are in northern Gaza following their return during the ceasefire earlier this year.

How Democrats in America’s most Jewish city embraced a critic of Israel for New York mayor

NEW YORK (AP) — Zohran Mamdani, an outspoken critic of Israel, is the expected Democratic nominee for mayor in America’s most Jewish city and that's raising alarms among some in the New York's Jewish community. They're worried about rising antisemitism and their waning influence. Mamdani's performance in this past week's Democratic primary also signals a sea change in the priorities of one of the party’s most loyal voting groups. An ideological realignment has been taking place among American Jews since the Hamas attack on Israel in 2023. And many Democratic voters, including Jews, have grown dismayed by Israel’s conduct in the war.

Key moments from the closing arguments at Sean 'Diddy' Combs' sex trafficking trial

NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors doubled down during closing arguments on their theory that Sean “Diddy” Combs carried out a sex trafficking criminal scheme for two decades as he enjoyed fame atop the hip-hop music world. Then a defense lawyer belittled the government's decision to prosecute his client, saying it was an unjust intrusion into the bedroom of Americans. The two differing views came across during closing arguments Thursday and Friday that will weigh heavily on a jury that begins deliberations on Monday. At stake is Combs' freedom after his arrest last September at a New York hotel. The 55-year-old entertainer has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges.

NBA free agent Malik Beasley under investigation regarding gambling allegations, AP source says

DETROIT (AP) — NBA free agent Malik Beasley is under investigation by the U.S. District Attorney’s office regarding gambling allegations tied to league games, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the matter.  “We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement released to the AP and other outlets on Sunday. The probe into Beasley comes 14 months after the NBA banned Toronto’s Jontay Porter, who was linked to a prop bet investigation and eventually pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud.
