LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Chamberlain, the handsome hero of the 1960s television series “Dr. Kildare” who found a second career as “king of the miniseries,” has died at age 90. Chamberlain died Saturday night in Waimanalo, Hawaii of complications following a stroke. That is according to publicist Harlan Boll. Tall, with classic good looks and romantic style, Chamberlain became an instant favorite with teenage girls as the compassionate physician on the TV series that aired from 1961 to 1966. Not until 2003 did he acknowledge publicly what Hollywood insiders had long known, that he was gay. He made the revelation in his autobiography, “Shattered Love.”

Tsunami warning lifted after 7.1 earthquake near Tonga in South Pacific; no initial damage reports

TOKYO (AP) — A strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake has hit near the Pacific nation of Tonga and an initial tsunami warning was lifted hours later. The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor hit about 62 miles northeast of the main island in the early morning hours of Monday local time. No reports of damage were immediately available. Tonga is a country in Polynesia made up of 171 islands with a population of a little more than 100,000 people, most of whom live on the main island of Tongatapu.

Doctor cites the pope's 'surprising improvement' after surviving life-threatening crises

ROME (AP) — The pope's doctor says Francis has shown ‘’a truly surprising improvement’’ since returning to the Vatican to convalesce after surviving a life-threatening bout with double-pneumonia. Dr. Sergio Alfieri said Saturday that he found the pope “very lively'' when he visited his apartment on Wednesday. That was three days after his release. He added that he thinks that the pope ”will return if not to 100%, 90% of where he was before." Alfieri said the pope’s voice was regaining strength and that his reliance on supplemental oxygen has decreased.

Venice says it will host Bezos wedding and denies reports of possible disruptions for the city

ROME (AP) — The city of Venice has confirmed it will host the wedding of multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos and fiancée Lauren Sanchez, denying reports the famous Italian city would be invaded by hundreds of celebrities and possible disruptions for citizens and tourists. The city in a short statement Saturday didn’t give a date for the wedding. Italian media have reported it will be between June 24-26, with a few days of celebrations. “The many speculations and fake news circulating about Jeff Bezos’ wedding are completely unfounded,” the statement said. Bezos is the owner of The Washington Post and founder and largest individual shareholder of Amazon. Among others, George and Amal Clooney celebrated their wedding in Venice in 2014.

Judge homers 3 times as Yanks go deep on Cortes' first 3 pitches and hit 9 HRs vs. Brewers

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge combined with Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger to go deep on the first three pitches from Nestor Cortes, then hit two more homers as the New York Yankees set a team record with nine home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers. Judge hit a solo homer, his ninth career grand slam and a two-run shot in his 40th multihomer game and third with three homers. He finished with a career-high eight RBIs in New York’s 20-9 victory. He came up just short of becoming the 19th player to hit four homers in a game when his sixth-inning fly fell on the right-field warning track for a run-scoring double.

Passenger flight and Air Force jet diverted from potential collision at DC airport

A U.S. passenger flight preparing to leave the nation’s capital and an incoming military jet received instructions to divert and prevent a possible collision. The Federal Aviation Administration says Delta Air Lines Flight 2983 was cleared for takeoff at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Friday around 3:15 p.m., the same time four U.S. Air Force T-38 Talon aircraft were inbound. The jets were heading for a flyover of Arlington National Cemetery when the Delta aircraft received an onboard alert of a nearby aircraft. The FAA says air traffic controllers issued corrective instructions to both aircraft. The agency says it will investigate.

Steph Curry scores a 3-book deal, starting with a 'personal reflection' on his life and career

NEW YORK (AP) — Steph Curry has a deal with a Random House Publishing Group imprint that you could call a 3-point play. The NBA superstar has agreed to release three books through One World, beginning Sept. 9 with “Shot Ready." Curry is calling the book a “personal reflection” on his life on and off the court. Curry’s book will be published in partnership with Unanimous Media, which he co-founded with Erick Peyton. Curry’s other publishing projects include two picture books with Penguin Young Readers. “Shot Ready” includes more than 100 photographs.

Ring bling: Dodgers show off glittering World Series rings in pregame ceremony

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers received their glittering World Series rings in a pregame ceremony. Shohei Ohtani, Clayton Kershaw and manager Dave Roberts received some of the loudest cheers as they walked a blue carpet to a stage set up between home plate and the mound. The players and coaching staff received blue boxes and hugs from owner Mark Walter and other executives. A choir opened the ceremony by singing “We Are the Champions” and a brass band closed it playing “They Not Like Us.” Inside the ring box a video plays highlights of the team's championship run.

Cuba had record 26 players on opening-day MLB rosters and Japan had 12 for its most since 2012

NEW YORK (AP) — Cuba had a record 26 players on Major League Baseball’s opening day rosters and Japan had 12 for its most since 2012. The percentage born outside the 50 states remained at 27.8%, matching its lowest level since 2016. There were 265 players from 18 nations and territories outside of the 50 states among 954 players on opening day active rosters and injured, restricted and inactive lists, according to the commissioner’s office. Cuba’s total topped its previous high of 23 in 2016, 2017 and 2022. Japan’s total was its most since 13 in 2012.
