Met Gala: Fashion's biggest night of the year is here. Here's how to watch and follow along

NEW YORK (AP) — Welcome to the first Monday in May! It's Met Gala time and the theme this year is menswear. Specifically, the dress code will focus on Black dandyism, tailoring and style. The starry guest list amounts to about 450 high-profile people from tech, sports, art, entertainment and more. This is the first Met Gala to focus exclusively on Black designers, and the first in more than 20 years to have a menswear theme. Among the hosts are Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo and A$AP Rocky. LeBron James is an honorary chair with Vogue's Anna Wintour as mastermind. The gala raises the bulk of the budget for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.

Atkinson, Bickerstaff and Udoka are the finalists for NBA coach of the year

Kenny Atkinson got Cleveland off to a 15-0 start to the season and led the Cavaliers to the best record in the Eastern Conference. J.B. Bickerstaff pulled Detroit from the basement to the playoffs. Ime Udoka guided Houston’s path to ending its five-year playoff drought. All three did elite jobs this season. And Monday, one of them will be the NBA’s coach of the year. The winner will be revealed on a TNT broadcast shortly after 6:30 p.m. Eastern. The coach of the year award, like several other NBA honors, was voted on by a global panel of 100 writers and broadcasters.

Gregg Popovich speaks at news conference introducing Mitch Johnson as new Spurs coach

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Gregg Popovich spoke publicly Monday for the first time since suffering a stroke six months ago, saying at the news conference where the San Antonio Spurs formally introduced Mitch Johnson as his replacement that the time was right to make that move. Flanked by Spurs greats Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, the 76-year-old Popovich — speaking far more softly than he has in the past — said his health is improving and that he fully believes in Johnson. Popovich says “things are getting better by the day, but it’s not good enough for what we plan ahead.”

'Thunderbolts' kicks off the summer movie season with $76 million at the box office

NEW YORK (AP) — Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts” opened with $76 million in domestic ticket sales. Studio estimates released Sunday showed the film kicking off the summer box office with a solid No. 1 debut, though it fell shy of Marvel’s more spectacular launches. All eyes had been on whether “Thunderbolts” could match the kind of performance Walt Disney Co.'s superhero factory once enjoyed so regularly. The results suggested Marvel’s malaise won’t be so easy to snap out of. But excellent reviews and good word-of-mouth should power “Thunderbolts” to strong business in the coming weeks. Other openings included the Alec Baldwin western “Rust,” which premiered in 115 theaters. It grossed about $25,000 in a debut more than three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on set.

Inside the 2025 Met Gala exhibit

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacques Agbobly has only been in the fashion business for five years. So the Brooklyn-based designer was at first shocked when contacted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, asking to use two of his designs in “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the spring Costume Institute exhibit that will be launched by the Met Gala. The designer says it is a “pinch-me” moment in his career. He is one of a number of emerging designers to be featured in an exhibit that looks at dandyism and its influence on Black style. The Associated Press toured the exhibit over the weekend. After Met Gala guests get a sneak preview on Monday night, the show opens to the public May 10.

Life in the fast lane: Middle East’s first all-women supercar club smashes petrolhead stereotypes

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dozens of women gathered over the weekend in Dubai to take part in a car rally across the United Arab Emirates. The event was organized by the region’s first ever all-female supercar owners club, the Arabian Gazelles, and saw 30 women living in the UAE and abroad take part in a four-day tour of the country. Hanan Mazouzi Sobati, the club's founder, said her motivation was “sheer frustration … because women were overlooked in this automotive scene, and I thought someone has to do something about it and to bring in more women and to drive the change.”

Weeks after fall, jockey Junior Alvarado rebounds to win a muddy Kentucky Derby aboard Sovereignty

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A hard fall in March left jockey Junior Alvarado with an injured shoulder, but the Venezuelan put it behind him with the ride of a lifetime in the Kentucky Derby. Most satisfying was guiding Sovereignty past other horses in the slop before drawing a bead on 3-1 favorite Journalism and chasing him down to win the 151st running at Churchill Downs by 1 1/2 lengths. The effort left Alvarado and his mount caked in mud, worn proudly along with the garland of red roses that were draped over the winner.

Here's why May the 4th is celebrated as Star Wars Day across the galaxy

May the 4th be with you. “Star Wars” fans around the world are celebrating the space epic and its surrounding franchise this weekend through an unofficial, fan-made holiday. A sly nod to one of the most popular catchphrases in the films, May the 4th is known as Star Wars Day and has been embraced by businesses and communities over the years. The May the 4th phrase appeared as early as 1979 in a British political ad and has exploded in recent years. The day is being marked with events ranging from special bobbleheads to a daylong celebration in a town sharing the first film's name.

Grand Theft Auto VI delayed again, this time until May 2026

BOSTON (AP) — The release of Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed again — until May 26, 2026. On Friday, Rockstar Games, in a post on X, apologized for the delay but said that it needed additional time “to deliver at the level of quality that you expect and deserve.” This is the latest setback for the sixth game of the hugely popular video game series. Shares of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, fell by nearly 7% on the news. Strauss Zelnick, the chairman and CEO for Take-Two Interactive Software, stood by Rockstar in a statement and said it supports the company “taking additional time to realize their creative vision.”

Man whose son was killed by Cincinnati police now charged in death of deputy

Police in Cincinnati say a man who struck and killed a county deputy with his car on Friday is the father of a teenager who was shot and killed by Cincinnati police a day earlier during a chase. Police say the 38-year-old driver of the car has been charged with aggravated murder in the deputy’s death. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement that he was sickened by what appears to be an intentional act of violence. Cincinnati’s police chief says the Hamilton County Sheriff’s deputy who died was directing traffic when he was hit by a car that drove into an intersection.
