A Buddhist statue stolen from a Japanese temple nearly 13 years ago is returned from South Korea
TOKYO (AP) — A Korean Buddhist statue from the 14th century that was stolen from a Japanese temple nearly 13 years ago has been returned following a yearslong legal battle between Japan and South Korea over its ownership. The gilt bronze statue of Bodhisatva — worshipped for mercy and compassion — is depicted in a sitting position and measures about 50 centimeters or 20 inches in height. It was stolen from the Japanese temple Kannonji on Japan's western island of Tsushima in 2012 by South Korean thieves. An Alaska Mother's Day tradition: Mingling with ice age survivors on a farm
PALMER, Alaska (AP) — It is one of Alaska’s favorite Mother’s Day traditions, getting up close and personal with animals that have survived the ice age. All moms get a flower and free admission Sunday at the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, about an hour’s drive north of Anchorage. Once inside, they will have the chance to view more than 70 members of the musk ox herd, including babies who have just been born. Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year, attracting over 1,500 visitors. It is a tradition that now stretches over three generations. Executive director Mark Austin says there would be a riot if they ever didn't have the traditional opening of the summer season on Mother's Day.

Ancient wooden spears found in Germany may have been wielded by Neanderthals, a new study suggests
NEW YORK (AP) — A set of ancient wooden spears may be younger than scientists thought and wielded by Neanderthals instead of their ancestors. The complete spears made of spruce and pine are among the oldest known hunting weapons. Previous estimates dated the spears to 300,000 years ago, but the new analysis says the spears are younger and may have been used by Neanderthals instead. The well-crafted spears could help scientists understand what Neanderthals were capable of and how they worked together to hunt. More research is needed to be sure of the spears’ age. The research was published Friday in the journal Science Advances.
