Miss Atomic Bomb: The woman, the mystery and the man who solved it
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A single photo sparked a 25-year search in Las Vegas. Historian Robert Friedrichs became obsessed with uncovering the true identity of Miss Atomic Bomb, the showgirl in a 1957 promo photo wearing a mushroom cloud swimsuit who seemed to vanish from the public eye. Friedrichs dug through archives, interviewed showgirls, and followed countless leads. The breakthrough came in an obituary: her real name was Anna Lee Mahoney. A temporary exhibit highlighting the woman in the photo, the mystery behind her name and the man who solved it opens in June at the Atomic Museum.
In Marseille, a shadow becomes art in Banksy’s latest street mural
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — The lighthouse appeared overnight. Painted on a wall tucked away in a quiet Marseille street, its beam aligned perfectly with the real-life shadow of a metal post on the pavement. At its center, stenciled in crisp white, are the words: “I want to be what you saw in me.” Banksy had struck again. On Friday, the elusive British street artist confirmed the work by posting two images on his official Instagram account — without caption or coordinates. Fans quickly identified the location as 1 Rue Félix Frégier, in the Catalans district of Marseille’s 7th arrondissement, near the sea.
Zion Williamson sued by a woman alleging the Pelicans star committed sexual violence against her
Zion Williamson is being sued by a woman describing herself as a former dating partner and who alleges the New Orleans Pelicans star committed repeated sexual violence against her. The civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court identifies the plaintiff as “Jane Doe.” She claims she began dating Williamson in 2018, when he played at Duke, and alleges that he engaged in abusive behavior toward her in California, Louisiana and Texas from 2020 until their relationship ended in 2023. Williamson’s New Orleans-based attorney, Michael Balascio, calls the claims in the lawsuit “categorically false and reckless,” and accuses the plaintiff of extortion.
Lance McCullers gets 24-hour security after online death threats, some aimed at 5-year-old daughter
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston's Lance McCullers is one of two MLB pitchers whose families have received online death threats this month as internet abuse of players and their families is on the rise. Boston reliever Liam Hendriks posted on social media soon after the incident with McCullers to call out people who were threatening his wife’s life and directing “vile” comments at him. The Astros contacted MLB security and the Houston Police Department following the threats to McCullers and an HPD spokesperson said Thursday that it remains an ongoing investigation. McCullers, who has two young daughters, reached out to the team to inquire about providing security for his family. Astros owner Jim Crane stepped in and hired 24-hour security.
Bernard Kerik, who led NYPD on 9/11 before prison and pardon, has died at 69
NEW YORK (AP) — Bernard Kerik, who served as New York City’s police commissioner on 9/11 and later pleaded guilty to tax fraud before being pardoned, has died. He was 69. FBI Director Kash Patel says Kerik’s death Thursday came after an unspecified “private battle with illness.” Kerik was hailed as a hero after the 9/11 attack and eventually nominated to head the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, before a dramatic fall from grace that ended with him behind bars. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to federal tax fraud and false statement charges. He served nearly four years in prison. Trump pardoned Kerik during a 2020 clemency blitz.
Victoria's Secret website is down in the US as the lingerie seller addresses a 'security incident'
NEW YORK (AP) — Victoria’s Secret has taken down its U.S. website and says some in-store services will be unavailable as it addresses a “security incident.” A message to customers remained in place of the popular lingerie brand’s normal shopping site Thursday morning, stating that the company had halted these services “as a precaution.” Victoria’s Secret did not immediately provide more details about the incident, or specify whether it was a cyber attack. It also wasn’t immediately clear when Victoria’s Secret identified the issue and began halting some of its operations. The company said it was working to fulfill orders placed before Monday and that it would be extending return windows and some direct mail coupon offers for impacted customers in the U.S.
Judge finds man charged with stalking Jennifer Aniston is mentally incompetent to stand trial
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man charged with stalking Jennifer Aniston and crashing his car through the front gate of her home has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial. A Los Angeles County judge made the ruling at a hearing Thursday. It came after a second doctor found 48-year-old Jimmy Wayne Carwyle not mentally fit to face charges of felony stalking and vandalism. Carwyle has pleaded not guilty. He'll now undergo more comprehensive examinations to determine how and where he'll be held and treated, and Aniston or her lawyer will be able to speak at a hearing in June. The incompetence finding is not permanent. A standard criminal process can resume later.
Ford recalls more than a million vehicles for software glitch that makes rearview camera unreliable
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford is recalling more than a million vehicles due to a software issue that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction, increasing the chance of an accident, government auto regulators said. The software error, which Ford reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month, may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze or not display when the vehicle is in reverse. The problem will be fixed by a dealer or via an “over-the-air” update, expected to be available sometime in the third quarter of 2025.
