Prepare to 'spring forward' for Daylight Savings Time

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — The days of springing forward and falling back could come to an end as Senator Vern Buchanon (R-Fl-16) introduces a bill to make Daylight Savings Time permanent.

On Jan. 4, 2021, Buchanon introduced his bill for the third time. The bill amends the Uniform Time Act of 1966 to make daylight savings time the new, permanent standard time. States with areas exempt from daylight savings time may choose the standard time for those areas.

In 2018 and in 2019, Buchanon introduced the same bill, but it died in Congress both times and never received a vote. In 2019, he had 23 co-sponsors for the bill, and Senator Marco Rubio introduced an identical bill of his own with 13 co-sponsors, but it also failed.

After this year’s bill was introduced in the House, it was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Although this sounds like progress, the previous bills never made it any farther than this committee.

In 2018, a bill was passed in the Florida Legislature making Daylight Savings Time a permanent fixture, but until Congress amends U.S. code to allow it, it will not happen.

Until then, Floridians, prepare to spring forward at least one more time on Saturday night, March 13.
