BELLE GLADE – Country music singer and songwriter Sara Evans will perform at the 2021 Black Gold Jubilee on April 17 at Torry Island.
Belle Glade’s annual Black Gold Jubilee began with a 1976 Bi-Centennial celebration sponsored by the City of Belle Glade. In the year following that memorable celebration, a group of citizens organized a similar festival hoping to imitate its success; however, the focus of the celebration would shift to the area’s rich soil. “Black Gold” refers to the rich muck soil of the Everglades Agricultural Area. The muck soil makes it possible for the EAA farmers to produce the winter vegetables consumed by much of the country’s east coast. Belle Glades motto is “Her Soil is Her Fortune.”
In 1978, the first official Black Gold Jubilee was held in McDonald Park, next to the Belle Glade Branch Library. Since then, the Jubilee has grown and attracts thousands of visitors from across South Florida. This year, the festival will include a children’s fishing tournament, a golf tournament and a day of fun at Torry Island.
On Saturday, April 10 the Children’s Fishing Tournament will be held at the Torry Island campground with registration at 7 a.m. Fishing starts at 9 a.m. The event is hosted by the Belle Glade Rotary Club. Divisions are: Toddler (up to 5 years old); Division 1 (6-8 years old); Division II (9-12 years old); Division III (13-15 years old). There is no entry fee. Bring your own fishing pole. Bait will be provided. Lunch will also be provided for the children. Trophies will be given in each age division for biggest fish, most weight and smallest fish. An application must be completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to the start of the contest. Applications are available on the festival website.
