A Collier County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to an unverified 911 call in Immokalee shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, January 30.
At the scene, the officer found two people fighting in a parking lot at the intersection of N. 3rd and Main streets.
The sheriff’s office describes events this way: Juan A. Ruiz, who had just turned 46 that day, was armed with a knife.
When the deputy ordered him to put down the knife he refused, and instead came toward the deputy.
According to informationfrom the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy shot the armed man in order to stop the threat.
Both subjects were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Fifty-five-year-old Mario Umanzor was being treated for his stabbing injuries. The deputy was not injured.
In accordance with CCSO policy, the deputy who fired the weapon will be placed on administrative leave.
A criminal investigation will be conducted into the altercation between the two subjects.
A Professional Responsibility Bureau investigation will also be conducted to ensure that the firing of the weapon was within the agency’s policies and procedures.
