Immokalee was selected to be a part of something big. It’s a well-being planned efforts called the Blue Zones Project that’s designed to unite our work sites, groceries stores, restaurants, schools and citizens like you, towards one common goal: making healthy choices easier. Blue Zones states that “Together, we’ll transform the well-being longevity for all people that call Immokalee, our community home.” Blue Zones staff wants our community to join them in learning more about opportunities this project can bring to our community and discover how you can help the community to continue to thrive. Mrs. Alvarez, Principal of Lake Trafford Elementary School made the welcome and special introductions for the ceremony. Mrs. Alverez stated some of the many habits which will be incorporated into the project: Plant Slant, Purpose, Family First, 80 Percent Rule, Right Tribe and Down Shift. The fourth grade class sang a song designed for the Down Shift. Guest Speakers were Dr Alan Weiss from NCH in Naples and Mr Logan and staff from Blue Zones Project. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was performed by Mr. Stoner with help from the students of LTE. The Blue Zones Project had its first successful Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in Immokalee. It was attended by parents, LTE-families, Immokalee Chamber of Commerce President Danny Gonzalez and Vice President Corporal Patti Calderson, Fred and Cherryle Thomas, Collier County Extension Services staff and staff from “Taste of Immokalee”, Marie Copilla , LTE staff and Collier County Public School Admin staff. Lake Trafford Elementary School had a beautiful presentation of healthy food choices for the ceremony attendees to sample and take with them.
