Immokalee Relay For Life, Friday April 8, 2016 6PM until 7AM Saturday April 9, 2016 relay for life logoJoin us for the opening ceremony for Immokalee’s Relay For Life event, Fri. April 8 at 6 p.m., Immokalee Sports Complex. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie in a family-friendly environment for the entire community. Join us as we come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The first lap is the Survivors Lap, all cancer survivors at the event take a lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while being cheered on by the other participants who line the track. Relay For Life events also recognize and celebrate caregivers, who give time, love, and support to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers facing cancer. The next three laps will be I. H. S. band playing and marching, a sight to behold! Next, the parade of teams will showcase our theme this year- Dr. Seuss with his many books and memorable characters such as The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Oh the Places You’ll Go, Horton Hears a Who, The Lorax, and many, many, more.  Bring your items to enjoy participating in the theme laps: kite flying, Thing 1 and Thing 2, crazy hat, glow in the dark, fishing gear, crazy socks, bubbles, purple, crazy shoes and bath laps. Relay For Life teams will camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around the track at the Immokalee Sports Complex. The event is 13 hours long, and because cancer never sleeps, each team will have at least one participant on the track at all times. If you are getting hungry in the wee hours of the morning, Beta will be selling pancakes and juice at 4 a.m. After dark, 9 p.m., the Luminaria Ceremony takes place as we remember people we have lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past, and support those whose fight continues. Candles will be lit inside of personalized bags and placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer. At various times there will be live entertainment from DJ Mongi, ICO dance team, Broadway Buddies, ODD Caper Band, and Jennifer Y Kompleto. Family fun and games continue with three-legged races, balloon pop, tug o war, frozen T-shirt contest, line dancing, potato golf and Cheeto toss. This will be an enjoyable night for family and friends to come together, have some fun and help raise funds to fight cancer. Please join us; you’ll be glad you did!
