It isn’t often that one sees football helmets being used in church to receive an offering from the people. However, this is exactly what has happened at First Baptist Church the past few months. Under the direction of new pastor, Timothy Pigg, ushers have taken up additional offerings to raise over $3,200.00 to cover the cost of feeding the varsity football team, and the offering is received in football helmets as a way of encouraging the church family to support high school athletics. First Baptist is located at the corner of S.R. 29 and Lake Trafford Road… the public is welcome at all services and activities. In addition to cooking a special spaghetti meal complete with meat sauce, grated cheese, garlic bread and Ranch dressing for the tossed salad, and many players like it on their spaghetti, Steve Price, one of the leaders at First Baptist Church is the “voice” of the Indians, not only announcing the games at Gary Bates Stadium, but also conducting an in-depth interview with the head coach that is aired prior to game time at each game… thanks to the CALL-FM radio station. Whether the games are at home or away, you can listen to the games at 90.5 or even listen to the broadcast on the internet anywhere inside the United States. Steve Price, himself a former Indian football player, several decades ago has been doing these meals for the varsity teams for years. First Baptist further shows its support of the IHS football program by allowing their new pastor, Tim Pigg, to serve as an assistant football coach for the freshman team. Associate Pastor, Hilario Perez, will start his youth Bible studies on Wednesday evenings in October, complete with pizza and time in the gym for all who attend. Even retired pastor, Rick Heers, serves as the chaplain for the football team along with Raul Cano, a youth leader at First Assembly of God Church here in Immokalee. After three weeks of away football games, the Indians will close out the regular season against Dunbar High School (a district match) on Friday, October 23, Lely High School (also a district match) on October 30th. and their final game-homecoming-will be at home against the International School of Broward on November 6th. This Friday’s game is their first district competition at Cypress High School in Fort Myers, followed by a non-district match, October 9th at Palmetto Ridge High School in Gold Gate Estates, and another district game, Friday, October 16th against Mariner High School in Cape Coral. Games in Lee County start at 7:30, while all Collier County games begin at 7 p.m.. District, regional and state competition will follow as long as the Indians qualify and continue to win!
