Coach Damas might not have been there physically for the District Title game against rival Golden Gate High School but I will tell you that he was there spiritually every second of the game. He is the teacher and voice behind this team. For the past eight years he has given every minute of his spare time to this program. His coaching techniques get more refined every year. He believes in the mastery of fundamentals and the intelligence that is needed to play the game. He is constantly talking to players in practice about execution and anticipation. He demands that the players read the game during every play, and I will tell you it is not an easy task with teenagers. He has put together a group of young men capable of reaching the State Finals, although we all know that in sports anything can happen. We are in the middle of a good streak and the boys are playing well from the top of the line to our defensive unit. Fourteen shutouts is a school record that will be hard to break. Needless to say, our back 5 players on defense have done an incredible job this year. But it has not just been the defensive unit alone because there are 11 players on the field, and the players that come in and out to provide the reinforcements when they are called upon. This has been a total team effort. Who would have thought that this little high school 30 plus miles from the Gulf would accomplish such a feat? Dedication, hard work and the belief that it could be done have been the ingredients to this success so far. We want to thank our administration, Mr. Fairbanks, our Principal and Mr. Gallegos our AD for their consistent support.
