Deputies were called to the Cypress Dome Trail on Sunday afternoon by a hiker who said he was lost in the woods. Just before 3:00pm, Uwe Mueggee of Naples called 911 to report that he had spent several hours on the trail, but couldn’t figure out how to get back to the trailhead. Deputies arrived on scene, but given the vast hiking area, they were unable to go in on foot. Instead, a deputy on scene narrowed down the approximate area that Uwe was in and notified the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Aviation unit. A CCSO helicopter landed at the trailhead where deputies handed over a map of the area. Within a few minutes, the CCSO helicopter located Uwe. He was loaded into the helicopter and flown back to the trailhead. Uwe said he knew that he was in trouble because he realized he didn’t have enough water. He stated that he started his hike at around 9:30am and only planned on hiking for three hours. By 3:45pm he was safely back at the trailhead thanks to the help of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. Uwe said he was very thankful for the quick response of law enforcement.
