Dr. Kamela Patton, Superintendent of Collier County Public Schools received the Statewide “STAR” Recognition award at a ceremony held on November 30, 2017 in Tampa. During her tenure with Collier County Public Schools, Dr. Patton has worked with staff to help increase FASFA application rates by hosting a number of financial aid nights so that students and parents could navigate the application process. Susan McManus, president of Champions for Learning, credited Patton’s dedication and her ability to build relationships which support education in the community. Additionally, Dr. Patton was recognized for her leadership efforts before Hurricane Irma made landfall as 28 schools within Collier County were opened within 29 hours to serve as emergency shelters. “Her leadership skills throughout the disruption of the storm, including two weeks of closed schools, were widely lauded” said Mary Chance of the Consortium of Florida Education Foundation. Dr. Patton has been with Collier County Public Schools since 2011 and since that time, the school district has increased its ranking to 5th in the State from 33rd. Dr. Patton has received a number of other awards and has been recognized by several organizations throughout her tenure.
