Maria Rodriguez and Yanex Ramirez are now soccer players with the Broward College team. Si se puede! Of course it can be done! You must be committed to your future, persevere obstacles that life brings on, and surround yourself with people that are willing to help you. I first met Maria Rodriguez when I was the principal of The RCMA Community School and she was a 4th grader. When I saw her running in the playground I was surprised that not even 6th grade boys could catch up to her. A year later when she was playing soccer for our club, The Soccer Pit Cobras I knew that if she stayed with the game she would be the best female soccer player to come out of Immokalee High School. Well now a freshman at Broward College and playing midfield she has sure proven her talents. Even Maria didn’t think that it would be possible to go to college and even more impossible to be playing soccer at the college level. She is not alone. Her long time school friend Yanex Ramirez is playing on the same team. These young women are sharing an apartment and attending classes at Broward. Yanex started playing for the Cobras when she was in middle school and played through her high school years as well as playing four years at Immokalee High School. She is a tough little player who never gives up and puts all her energy into the game. All of us who know these two young ladies are extremely proud of them. They are setting the bar for other girls in our community. Nothing is impossible unless you make it that way.
