According to the Florida Department of Health, flu activity is high and continues to increase. Although the panhandle region of Florida experienced the largest increase in flu activity, Collier County has seen mild activity while Lee and Hendry County have seen moderate activity. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that children under two years of age, adults 65 years of age and older, pregnant women, and those with underlying medical conditions should seek treatment as soon as possible as they are generally considered high-risk for complications due to suspected influenza. In order to help combat the flu virus, the Florida Department of Health in Collier County hosted two free flu clinics last weekend. Andrea McKinney with the Collier County Health Department said that on Saturday, January 27, 2018, 512 free flu shots were administered at their Naples campus and on Sunday, January 28, 2018, roughly 300 free flu shots were administered at their Immokalee campus. “Individuals should continue to receive the flu vaccine particularly children and frail elders” said Stephanie Vick, Administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Collier County. “Other actions that can be taken to prevent getting and spreading the flu are frequent hand washing, keeping hands away from one’s face and staying away from sick people. If you are sick, stay home in order to prevent spreading the illness to others. Individuals must be vigilant in order to protect each other.”
